Opening Celebrations and Public Service

Ed thumbs up
So, I have filled my invite request list and still have two DW codes free! Anyone want them? Taken!

In other news, it keeps coming to my attention that OpenID intimidates people. It shouldn't. It's exactly like any other log-in, only easier.

To do my bit for a distributed internet, allow me to offer the following extremely simple, step-by-step (there are only two) directions for using OpenID on DW:

1) Go here and enter your LJ/IJ/JF/etc. username (like this: branchandroot.livejournal.com).

2) When the confirmation page comes up, click on "yes, always".

That's it! You're logged in, congratulations. Go comment or make an flist or load a userpic or whatever.

Now, to be really spiffy, you can add a third step.

3) Go here and enter an email address. When you get the confirmation email, click the link to validate.

Now you can receive email notification of replies to comments you make while you're logged in like this.

To log in again, just go back to that first linked page (which is also linked from the log-in form with the handy text "log in via OpenID") and enter username.livejournal.com again. Because you selected "yes, always", you won't even have to deal with the confirmation page again, because it's now automatic. For greatest ease, check the little box on the "welcome back" page that says "remember me".

OpenID is not arcane. It's just another log-in. Only easier.

DW question
DW question from one of my friends... any ETA on when we can set up reading filters on Dreamwidth?

BTW - for your webhost, did you end up with Lunarpages? Or something else? The webhost issue has raised it's ugly head again and this time I really really am moving.

Re: DW question
The bug (which you can keep an eye on here if you want to track progress on this) says that this issue is set to block launch. Which means it will be done sometime before launch, eg within the next few months.

Hostmonster placated us enough that we stuck with them, and the problems have not recurred, so I think we just got a dud server cluster. I am increasingly unimpressed with the quality of service people they're hiring, though, so you might want to call both Lunar and HM with some technical questions and see who seems more on the ball.

Re: DW question
Thanks! I'll pass that on to her.

My site went down a few months ago when I didn't change my credit card information for expiration date and I've been emailing them every few weeks on the next bit of restore process. The latest email back: "It appears that the site is not on our server any longer. I have refunded your last payment of $59.40 and unlocked the domain so that you may transfer to a new provider. " Riiiight... Well, I think the feeling is mutual. ~..~ Definitely time to leave!

I think I'm going with Lunar - I do like their support pages and my friends on them are pretty happy so far. I'll let you know how it works out. ^^

Re: DW question
And back from my friend on DW...

"so if I read this right - not fixed for 2-3 months? We need to look for something that outlines their planned launch roadmap to pin down the date more clearly. setting up the alternative reading filters using an authenticated RSS feed is going to be work. If launch is set for less than one, I'll just shut down my DW and wait. if longer, I'll keep cross-posting but ignore DW reading list and set up my feeds and wait."

edit - nevermind, she found the roadmap
